Social Work - BSc (Hons)

Jodie鈥檚 drive and passion to help others means she鈥檚 been able to balance full-time study and being a mum of two. BCU has provided a place for Jodie to thrive as a successful Social Work student.

鈥淚 worked in accountancy for 18 years before I decided it was time for a change. I鈥檇 started to realise that I wanted a career working with others, one where I could feel like I was making a genuine difference in people鈥檚 lives. Social Work instantly appealed to me as a way to help people and have a fulfilling career.

As I鈥檇 been out of study for a long time, I completed an Access course and then applied to university. I attended quite a few open days, as it was important to me to find somewhere that was inclusive for mature students. BCU definitely had the most welcoming environment, I instantly felt at home.

The Social Work course at BCU covers everything you need to know to become a registered social worker. The course is regulated by Social Work England and is one of the largest providers of social workers in the UK. Everyone I鈥檝e met in the social work sector knows about the teaching at BCU and how capable BCU Social Work graduates are. I knew I鈥檇 be in the perfect place to learn everything I鈥檇 need for my career.

The course has taught me so much about working with vulnerable individuals, safeguarding and social policy, and I can鈥檛 wait to use my knowledge during my placements in years 2 and 3. I feel prepared to put the skills I鈥檝e learned into practice in a professional social work setting and I鈥檓 excited to start my career.

As a mature student I was really worried about fitting in at university, but I had nothing to worry about at all. The university is so friendly and inclusive, and I have been made to feel accepted by all of my tutors. My tutors have been great at resolving any issues I鈥檝e had during my course and being a helping hand whenever I need one.

The first goal I set for myself when I started my studies was to achieve a good work-life balance, I knew it would be challenging but I could do it. I passed my first year with excellent grades thanks to my hard work and perseverance. I鈥檓 proud to be a full-time student who gives 100% to my course and still spends quality time with her two children.

I have grown in so many ways since being a student at BCU. My course has made me more understanding of the world and confident in my ability to make a difference to others.

Being able to say 鈥業 am BCU鈥 fills me with pride.鈥
