Dr Swann lectured at Oxford Brookes University, the University of Leicester and the University of Dundee before becoming a teaching and research fellow at the University of Osnabrueck, Germany. He has been a Research Assistant within the Property and Trust Law Team at the Law Commission.

He was a Visiting Professor at the Jana Dlugosz University in Cz臋stochowa, Poland and has given guest lectures in Rijeka, Croatia, sponsored by the Deutsche Stiftung f眉r Internationale Zusammenarbeit, as well as teaching at the British Studies Centre of Humboldt University in Berlin. He was a member of the Study Group on a European Civil Code.
