Day in the life of a Fashion Design student

Find out what a typical day looks like for Emily Brookes, a student studying BA (Hons) Fashion Design at BCU.

Emily's top tip for starting university

鈥淭ake some time to relax before the course but find some time to warm up by practising drawing, sewing and exploring fashion shows or magazines, start gathering basic art and sewing supplies as a bit of preparation can make a big difference!鈥

This is what a typical day looks like for me鈥︹ 鈥

Every day is different as a fashion student, I have scheduled university lectures and tutorials 2 or 3 days a week. Here's what a typical day on campus looks like for me.

8am - Wake up.鈥I like to sleep in as long as possible! But on days when I have uni, I like to wake up with enough time for breakfast and to get ready to leave on time.鈥 鈥

9:30am 鈥 Leave for uni.鈥I live in student halls about 15 minutes away from campus, so I like to walk to uni.鈥 鈥

10am 鈥 Class begins鈥︹

My scheduled time at university varies every day. Sometimes I鈥檒l receive a lecture from my tutors and will then have work to complete. Some days I have scheduled tutorials where I can receive feedback on my current assignments.鈥 My day can include anything from making patterns and sewing to building my portfolio, to draping and experimenting with designs, or even completing photoshoots or research tasks.鈥

1pm 鈥 Lunch!鈥 I usually grab lunch from one of the cafes on campus and sit outside if the weather is nice. Eastside Park is on campus and lovely on a sunny day.

2pm 鈥 Back to class.鈥My afternoons in university will usually mean catching up on previous work and private study in one of the fashion workshops or study spaces in the Parkside Building.

5pm 鈥 Home time.鈥I walk back home around 5 pm. I typically like to have a rest when I get home.聽I like to cook my dinner too and will try and spend some time with my flatmates if they鈥檙e free.聽

6 - 11 pm 鈥 Free time.鈥My evenings can vary and are full of lots of fun things! From having society meet-ups to attend to going to the gym or heading out with my flatmates or working a shift in my part-time job.
