Copland鈥檚 arresting Fanfare for the Common Man finds a perfect counter-balance in Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman by Grammy-award winning American composer Joan Tower, which shares the same scoring and has a theme reminiscent of Copland鈥檚.聽 鈥淎 blend of loose-limbed minimalism and feel-good neo-romanticism鈥� is how the Washington Post described Michael Torke鈥檚 marimba concerto Mojave, a work inspired by the arid landscape of the Mojave Desert in Nevada.聽 2022 BBC Young Musician winner and RBC鈥檚 own Jordan Ashman is the perfect virtuosic soloist.聽
Rachmaninoff鈥檚 Symphonic Dances have emerged from the shadows of his best known works to become an audience favourite.聽 Melding Russian and modernist influences, autobiographical references and religious chant and, of course, glorious melody, this was his final work and the only one written entirely while he was living in the US.聽
