What happens at an RBC Open Day?

As well as talks giving all of the relevant information needed for prospective students interested in studying with us, our Conservatoire Open Days are crammed full of performances, workshops and tours, showcasing everything RBC has to offer. Here's the sort of activities you could get involved with if you come to our next Conservatoire Open Day.

Lively beginnings

Appropriate for a music and acting institution, our Open Day聽never begins聽quietly! RBC鈥檚 Percussion Department kicked off the day in Boult鈥檚 Bar with ensemble and duo performances that were met with loud applause. This was shortly followed by a short but lively set from the Conservatoire Folk Ensemble in The Bradshaw Hall which preceded the day鈥檚 Welcome Talk, hosted by our Principal, Julian Lloyd Webber.

Loud and proud

Performance is at the heart of what happens here at RBC, so after a lively start there聽were multiple opportunities to see performances from RBC鈥檚 current students throughout the day. This included regular performances in Boult鈥檚 Bar, a Jazz Department concert, Brass Band concert, Early Music Department performances, and even a chance to observe our Symphony Orchestra rehearsing with the Berlin Philharmonic鈥檚 Principal Oboist Jonathan Kelly, ahead of their performance which took place the next evening!

Hello, Acting!

One of the most well-received performances of the day was an impressive Open Day debut from RBC鈥檚 Acting students, who performed musical excerpts from their production of 鈥楲ittle Women鈥 which was staged in October 2019. Talks about our聽Acting, Applied Theatre and Stage Management courses also ran聽all day聽giving visitors information about course content, student experience and the auditions process. It was a pleasure to have our actors perform at an RBC Open Day for the first time since our music and acting schools merged in 2017, and we hope they鈥檒l be back to perform again for guests in June!

Community spirit

Our January Open Day really demonstrated the friendly聽community spirit we鈥檙e so proud of at the Conservatoire. As well as showing off their hard work during performances and workshops, staff and students were on hand to answer any questions potential applicants聽had about life at RBC throughout the day. This included the option to go on tours of the Conservatoire鈥檚 state-of-the-art facilities and university accommodation. Visiting during Open Day really does offer the best chance to get a feel for life as a student at RBC.
