Are you considering the role AI is playing when it comes to individuals choosing to work for you? In this blog we look over the rise of AI in the graduate recruitment process and how it is impacting how the future workforce looks and applies for jobs.Ìý
Friend or foe?
There are many articles and opinions when it comes to AI. Those who may see the threat and those who may see the opportunity. Whilst it is an important discussion to have, could the topic itself be fuelling the nerves of younger talent currently looking for work? According to an article by Wonkhe it could very well be impacting on the decisions students are making about their careers.
It is true, there are some processes that have benefitted from the introduction of AI. For example, customer service. With the introduction of ‘chatbots’, customers can now access for quick and simple enquiries at any time before the need to access a real person.
Data automation is another area which has benefitted from AI advancements, speeding up the process of this task. Though it is still needing to be reviewed to ensure that the correct data has been pulled through. So, whilst the task has been advanced, there is still the need for human analysis of this data.
The changing workforce and roles
As students and graduates begin to assess their future career paths, the advancement of AI could be playing a role in how they see entry-level jobs or the number of entry-level roles available. With many entry-level roles typically being administrative level, for the future workforce, these types of roles could drastically reduce as tasks related to these roles are automated.
It is important to note, however, that this isn't new. We have all at some point been guided through a changing workforce and companies shouldn't hold back on innovation, but more may need to be done to help students and graduates navigate this.
Managing role expectationsÌý
In this ever-changing recruitment landscape, why not consider educating your future talent on how future roles in your organisation may be impacted and what to expect?
One way to do this would be working closely with education providers to help students understand how job roles are being improved by the introduction of AI tools and how universities can provide the learning to help students be in the best place possible when they graduate. Working with your local careers team can help students (and your future employees) avoid making bad recruitment decisions based on AI fears.Ìý
Creating opportunities
There are some SME companies who may be reluctant about implementing AI into their business either through expertise, time or knowledge in this area. Which is interesting, due to the earlier points on AI growing in larger businesses.
This could present an opportunity for graduates - and individuals you may consider bringing into your workforce. For example, by providing the learning during their studies, students and graduates could then bring in both the knowledge and expertise to help support SMEs with utilising AI. Supporting some SMEs to advance and opening a potential pathway for graduates into smaller businesses.
There may also be larger organisations who are either reluctant or don’t currently have the staff with the expertise to introduce. This could again be something that organisations work closely with universities on.
Looking to the future
As technology advances, so will recruitment. But it is important for businesses to not risk losing graduate talent and instead help to shape the next generation through these advancements.
Whilst there are other factors that can negatively impact a jobs market, AI and technology doesn't need to. Instead, we can allow it to shape and compliment what is already being done. It should be designed to help us move forward, rather than to replace what was once there.
