Birgan鈥檚 current research is concerned with temporality as a subject and instrument of political contention from a comparative perspective. Her doctoral research, entitled 鈥淭emporality and Social Movements: A Political Ethnography of Activism in Contemporary Turkey (2016-2018)鈥 investigated the ways in which grassroots oppositional movements were affected by the accelerated authoritarian turn in Turkish politics after the 2016 military coup attempt.
Her areas of research include: Social movements and contentious politics, socio-political change, social justice, climate justice, social theory, sociological theory, political sociology, cultural sociology, time and temporality, Global South and Global North, qualitative research, ethnography, and feminist epistemology.
