What is Artificial Intelligence?

AI is quickly becoming one of the most talked about technologies available to us today. From written work, programming and unique images, AI can seemingly do it all. But what is artificial intelligence and how can we use it to our advantage? We are here to help you get to grips with this new technology that is making such an impact on our world.

What is AI?

Even though it may seem like a new form of聽technology,聽AI has been around since the 1950s.聽Back then,聽it was聽defined聽similarly as it is today聽鈥撀燼 machine鈥檚 ability to perform tasks that would usually only be able to be performed聽through聽the capability of聽human intelligence.聽Some of these聽human intelligence traits that AI聽can emulate聽include聽speech聽recognition,聽visual聽perceptions,聽problem-solving, planning, language translation聽and聽learning.聽

AI聽systems such as聽ChatGPT and Google Bard use data聽to create responses and decisions聽without any specific programming.聽AI has become an important application in broad areas such as聽healthcare, finance, transport, education and more. 聽

Different types聽of AI聽聽

AI is affecting everything and everyone,聽and the benefits of AI for day-to-day activities聽are聽manifold.聽AI聽can help with the smallest or biggest聽of聽tasks,聽and here are some of the聽different types聽of AI that may interest you. 聽

  • Narrow AI -聽This type of intelligence,聽usually referred to as 鈥榳eak鈥 AI,聽is a vital system incorporated into modern computer technology.聽This聽innovation聽helps with learning and giving information聽to undertake聽tasks聽without being specifically programmed to do so.聽聽This is one of the more well-known systems of AI as it聽uses a search engine basis to gather data and then output that data for its audience or user.聽Narrow AI is not conscious,聽sensitive聽or driven by emotion like humans,聽but instead,聽this聽device works with a predetermined range of information聽to deliver responses. Examples of narrow AI are聽Google聽Translate, Grammarly,聽Siri, ChatGPT聽and more.聽聽聽
  • Artificial general intelligence (AGI):聽This type of intelligence聽which is most often used in conjunction with 鈥楽trong AI鈥櫬爎epresents聽the ability聽of聽machines to understand learning and聽processes usually directly undertaken by us humans.聽This application does have聽the聽ability to access information like humans through direct聽reasoning, communication and problem-solving.聽AGI has a cognitive ability that Narrow AI聽does not.聽This form of Ai is becoming more ingrained into our everyday society.聽Examples of聽AGI are聽Self-driving cars, AlphaGo,聽GPT-3,聽image recognition and more.聽
  • Superintelligence聽(ASI):聽This type of intelligence is more advanced in the sense that it聽surpasses聽the聽capacities聽of the human brain and cognitive abilities.聽ASI聽is self-aware and聽has the ability to聽think of abstractions and understandings humans cannot.聽As聽well聽as this,聽the system can聽comprehend聽human emotions,聽decisions and experiences聽and can also develop its own聽beliefs聽and聽emotions based on the AI鈥檚 self-comprehension.聽At the moment,聽ASI is more of a theoretical concept than a real-life one.聽However, some examples, such as characters like R2D2 and other functioning and thinking robots, envision this kind of AI.聽
  • Machine Learning聽(ML).聽This聽type of intelligence聽is a subfield in AI that聽uses聽algorithms聽and statics to聽access information. This聽application is more mathematical in its process and聽works with computer applications to learn without programming.聽ML is mostly used to complete聽complex tasks like a human brain would when problem-solving.聽Some examples of ML聽are聽face recognition, automated emails,聽medical imaging such as聽Xirays聽and more. 聽

Expert opinion聽聽

We spoke to聽Dr Mariam Adedoyin-Olowe,聽Programme Leader of聽MSc Artificial Intelligence聽in the School of Computing and Digital Technology at 探花直播聽to get her聽opinion on how AI聽is changing our world and the future.

鈥淭he AI field is data-rich, and it thrives on data where it can spot long-term, hidden patterns and make predictions at a pace that people cannot. These tools will define the future for medical treatment and professionals will need to be AI-literate in the future. For instance, Short- and Long-term healthcare are challenging areas to work in, with a range of experts聽required聽to generate positive outcomes for people over time. Right down from healthy life choices to critical care, AI has the scope to effect聽significant change聽in the health domain.

鈥淎I stock trading implements聽robo-advisors which has the capability of scrutinising millions of data points for each stock and聽assist聽in the execution of trades at the peak price. With AI technology, traders can forecast the stock markets with higher accuracy. AI systems also help traders lessen risks and聽provide聽higher returns.

鈥淥ur lives are becoming increasingly interwoven with AI-based systems. Since artificial intelligence is applied in various areas to make important decisions about us and our lives, it is essential we ensure that this technology works for the benefit of all of us.鈥澛
